It's language, stupid!

Which came first: the physical or the linguistic?

It is a good bet that human languages evolved some 40,000 years ago. But what was before that?

If man could not speak, how did they catch game or light a fire? Without language we cannot do any of these things.

So which came first, the physical act of catching game and lighting fires, or the linguistic statements of ‘catching game’ and ‘lighting fires’?

Like the chicken and the egg, the physical and the linguistic need each other. Human consciousness was turned on when these two adversaries decided to work together.
